Office of the Deputy Regional Director
The Honorable Gilbert Blue
Chief
Catawba Indian Nation
P.O. Box 188
Catawba, South Carolina

Dear Chief Blue,
/First paragraph redacted/
For sake of clarity, it is important for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to make known its position in the crucial matter of its government to government relations with the Catawba Indian Nation. At present, the Bureau conducts it business with the Tribe acting through its Executive Committee. Recent filings with the Court in the /case name redacted/ case indicate that a group of tribal members are planning to conduct an election on September 7, 2002.
If, indeed, an election is held on September 7 it constitutes an internal tribal matter into which the Bureau shall not intrude. However, the Bureau stands ready to provide technical assistance in conducting elections or any other assistance the Tribe may request.
Sincerely,
/signed Brian Pogue/
Acting Regional Director
